Baby Self-Feeding
I previously made a post about making your own Stage 1 baby food purees. Now, my daughter is 8 months old, and she is all about attempting to feed herself. After much research, here is what I feel was the best option for Bean's self-feeding. Enjoy!
**I still make and freeze her food in the ice trays. Then, I store in large gallon freezer bags. Be sure to use the frozen cubes within three months to ensure ultimate freshness.
What You'll Need:
- Baby food cubes
- Small bowls (Walmart)
- Baby spoon (Walmart)
- Regular spoon
- Small funnel
- 1/4 measuring cup
- Baby food pouches (I use Reusable Kiddzo Pouches )
Directions:
Place the frozen cubes in the bowls, and microwave for about 45-60 seconds. It needs to be soft, not warm like you would if you were serving baby.
Left to right: sweet potato, green beans, butternut squash, applesauce |
I only place three cubes (3 ounces) into each pouch. |
Next, place the funnel into the top of the pouch, and pour contents of bowl. I use the baby spoon to help guide the mixture as it can sometimes get clogged in the funnel.
Use the big spoon to help ensure that the double-zip pouch closes completely. They can be a little difficult to snap, but I haven't had an issue of leaks, yet.
Label each pouch with the contents and ounces with a Sharpie. Don't worry: the Sharpie can be removed by writing over the marker with an Expo.
Lastly, store in the refrigerator for up to three days. To heat, simply place pouch in warm water for about 20 seconds (you just want to get the chill off of it), the squish the mixture around.
Remove the cap (keep out of baby's reach), and let baby have fun!

**Note: You can make your baby food and add directly into the pouches instead of freezing then adding. I still had some food cubes leftover that I wanted to use. Also, try to alternate the food choices. To help keep baby's digestive system from stopping up, be sure to add a "P" in their daily food intake (peas, pears, or prunes).
